What is Special Educational Needs (SEN)?
A pupil has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them.
They have a learning difficulty or disability if they have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others the same age, or a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools.
Special educational provision is educational or training provision that is additional to, or different from, that made generally for other children of the same age.

EAL
A learner of English as an additional language (EAL) is a pupil whose first language is other than English.
‘First language is the language to which the child was initially exposed during early development and continues to use this language in the home and community. If a child acquires English subsequent to early development, then English is not their first language no matter how proficient in it they become.’
At Broadford we welcome and value the cultural, linguistic and educational experiences that pupils with EAL bring to the school Implement school-wide strategies to ensure that EAL pupils are supported in accessing the curriculum Help EAL pupils to become confident and fluent in English in order to be able to fulfill their academic potential.
Our EAL policy can be accessed here
